Gasoline(petrol), a very vital need for our vehicles

As part of our efforts to give tips and guidelines to prolong the life of your car, I will be writing about gasoline today, a very vital need for our vehicles, it's therefore paramount to know some few do's and don'ts.

If you happen to see a gasoline(petrol) tanker filling the tanks at a gas station, come back another day or go to a different station. As the station’s underground tanks are being filled, the turbulence can stir up sediment. Sediment in your gas(petrol) can clog fuel filters and fuel injectors, causing poor performance and possibly necessitating repairs which we really don't want.

This shouldn't have been a problem normally but some gas stations don’t have pump filters, making you more vulnerable to dirty gas (petrol) .

Find a station that you trust and stick to it because some stations may mix their Fuel,  adjust their pumps and sometimes don't place the nozzle properly making you paying for fuel you didn't purchase —or worse, water down their product.

It is necessary sometimes to use fuel treatment and injectors cleaner(sold in any standard gasoline station ) to help clean the injection system of the car, boost the octane rating of the fuel and also protect your vehicle when you unknowingly buy bad fuel sometimes.

Avoid using leaded Fuel as much as possible as it damages the catalytic converter of the car, it toxic on emission and cause spark plug fouling amongst other things.

Though the used of Tetraethyllead as additives in petrol has been discontinued in developed countries but it still finds it way into fuel in developing countries.

Care and maintenance for used cars.

As a sequel to my post yesterday on tips for keeping your brand new car in top notch conditions, here are some tips for your used cars.

Being car considerate shouldn’t stop after the break-in(explained in yesterday's post).
Drive with care every day and your car will reward you with longer intervals without repair.

•Do not race your car’s engine during start-up. This is a quick way to add years of wear to your engine, especially if it’s cold outside.

•Accelerate slowly when you begin your drive. The most wear to the engine and drive train occurs in the first ten to twenty minutes of operation because the lubricant hasn't gone round.

•Warming the engine by letting it idle in the driveway is not a smart idea. The engine doesn’t operate at its peak temperature, resulting in incomplete fuel combustion, soot deposits on cylinder walls, oil contamination, and ultimately damaged components.

•Put less strain on your engine and automatic transmission by shifting to neutral at red lights. Otherwise, the engine is still working to push the car even while it’s stopped.

•Avoid driving at high speeds and accelerating quickly, especially when it’s very hot or very cold outside. Such driving behavior will result in more frequent repairs.

•Extend the life of your tires with careful driving. Observe posted speed limits. Avoid fast starts, stops, and turns, it damages the thread of the tire. Don't run into potholes on speed, it damages the structure of the tire and the arms of the car. Don’t do burn out and of course, avoid objects on the road.

•When turning your steering wheel, don’t hold it in an extreme right or left position for more than a few seconds. Doing so can damage the power-steering pump.

•Consolidate your short driving trips. Most of the wear and tear — as well as the pollution your car generates — takes place in the first few minutes of driving. Doing several errands at once, during low traffic hours if possible, will keep your engine happier longer.

Care and maintenance tips to prolong the life of your brand new car

I got into a discussion with a friend yesterday about something he could do and not do with his brand new car. I thought it would be nice to share some of them.

Here are some advice, surprising tricks, and car care tips to prolong the life of your brand new automobile

Be patient during the break-in period( break-in is generally a process of moving parts wearing against each other to produce the last small bit of size and shape adjustment that will settle them into a stable relationship for the rest of their working life.)

You’ve bought your dream brand new car and now you want to make it last as long as possible in top condition. Here are some things to remember.

• During the break-in period, typically the first 1,600 km, keep your speed under 88 km or to the speed recommended by your car’s manufacturer.

• Avoid heavy loads on the drive train, such as towing other cars , and loading the roof rack or trunk with heavy materials.

• Do not allow your new car to idle for long periods — this is good advice for the life of your car, but especially during break-in. The oil pressure generated by doing so may not be sending oil to every part of your engine.

• Use only light to medium acceleration, keeping the engine rpms below 3,000 for the first few hours of driving.

• Do not exceed 4,000 rpm until the engine has reached full operating temperature.

• Avoid labouring the engine by operating the engine in too high a gear at low speeds.

• Do not use full throttle during starts and normal driving.

With all these listed above, you will be able to prolong the life of your car. I will discuss same for used cars tomorrow.

Understanding the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)

Today, I will do a lengthy write up because I don't want to split this topic.

People have been confused over the years with this so called Vehicle Identification Number(VIN), I will try and do justice to it as much as I can.

Every car has a unique 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) filled with important details. The VIN is like the Social Security Number for your car.

It is used when you register your car, buy insurance, and when your car is in the garage(not road side mechanics) for repairs -- to help order the right parts. The police use it to identify your vehicle if it's been stolen.

It would be nice to know what those mysterious but highly important numbers mean, wouldn't it?

Aside from amazing your family and friends with your car knowledge, you also need VINs to get a vehicle history on a used car so that you can find out about its history before you buy it.

Look on the upper left side of your dash — you should see an important-looking badge with 17 numbers on it. You can also find your VIN on the doorjamb sticker on the driver's side.

Here's how the numbers break down.
*World Manufacturer Identifier
The first three digits make up the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI)

•    Position one represents the nation of origin, or the final point of assembly. For instance, cars made in the U.S. start with 1,4 or 5, Canada is 2, Mexico is 3, Japan is J, Korea is K, England is S, and Germany is W.

•    Position two tells you about the manufacturer. For example, A is for Audi, B is for BMW, G is for General Motors, N is for Nissan, T is for Toyota/Lexus and H is for Honda.

•    Position three indicates the vehicle's type or manufacturing division. For example, 1TJ represents Toyota/Lexus passenger cars; 2HK, Honda passenger cars; and WVW, Volkswagen Wagon.

*Vehicle Descriptor Section
Digits 4 through 9 make up the Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS).

•    Positions four through eight tell you about the car, such as the model, body type, restraint system, transmission type, and engine code.

•    Position nine, the "check" digit, is used to detect invalid VINs based on a mathematical formula that was developed by the Department of Transportation. (still trying to get the formula)

*Vehicle Identifier Section
Digits 10 through 17 make up the Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS).

•    Position 10 indicates the model year. The letters from B-Y correspond to the model years starting with 1981, with Y bringing up the rear with 2000; model years 2001 and up are indicated with numbers, starting with the number 1.

There is no I, O, Q, U or Z.
Here's a list of the model years: B=81, C=82, D=83, E=84, F=85, G=86, H=87, J=88, K=89, L=90, M=91, N=92, P=93, R=94, S=95, T=96, V=97, W=98, X=99, Y=00, 1=01, 2=02, 3=03, 4=04, 5=05, 6=06, 7=07, 8=08, 9=09, A=2010, B=2011, C=2012, D=2013, E=2014, F=2015.

•    The letter or number in position 11 indicates the manufacturing plant in which the vehicle was assembled. Each automaker has its own set of plant codes.

•    The last 6 digits (positions 12 through 17) are the production sequence numbers. This is the number given to your car on the assembly line.

With these, I believe you will understand your car VIN better and stop looking for the year of your car on the seat belts. Only the VIN gives you the true year.

Tips to keep your car leather from drying out and cracking

Leather cars seats are durable and don’t require a lot of maintenance. After a few years, however, the seats can become soiled. Use a leather cleaner to remove dirt and stains. Then apply a leather protectant formulated for pigmented or top-coated grain leather (the leather used for most leather car upholstery). Protectants will resist stains and make the upholstery easier to clean in the future. Choose a protectant that includes conditioners to keep your leather supple.
